General Note:
The American Neoclassical sculptor Hiram Powers (1805-1873) was commissioned to design a water fountain in the southwest quadrant of the grounds of the Hampton-Preston House in the mid-19th century. The home was purchased by investors in 1890, among them Reverend William R. Atkinson (1841-1901) president of the Charlotte Institute for Women, and became the newly incorporated Presbyterian Institute for Young Ladies. Inset, students from the Presbyterian Institute for Young Ladies congregate near the fountain, just a stone's throw from the college portico.
