Notes

General Note:
Designed by English landscape architect and gardener, John Waddell, the Hampon-Preston House was renowned for its superbly crafted gardens. The grounds contained meticulous boxwoods, curiously foreign trees and flowers, and reputedly encouraged celebrated naturalist John J. Audubon and his contemporaries to visit Columbia in the 1830s and 1840s. Inset, students from the Presbyterian Institute for Young Ladies savor an afternoon on the grounds of the college.
