General Note:
Formerly a private residence and Ursuline Convent, the Hampton-Preston House in Columbia, South Carolina was purchased in 1890 by the distinguished Reverend William R. Atkinson (1841-1901), president of the Charlotte Female Institute. The property was established as the Presbyterian Institute for Young Ladies. This institution was dissolved in 1915 and the property was subsequently offered to the Chicora College for Ladies of Greenville, South Carolina. Chicora College remained in Columbia until it was merged with Queens College of Charlotte, North Carolina in 1930.
