Abstract:
"Piedmont and Northern Points of Historical Interest with the vicinity of territory served by Piedmont and Northern Railway Company Charlotte, N.C., center of gold mining in the U.S. prior to discovery of gold in California, now has active mining even within the city. The first branch U.S. Mint was built in Charlotte in 1836. During the Civil War it was used as a Confederate hospital. Thos. A. Edison worked in the building doing research relating to refining ore. During the World War it housed Red Cross headquarters. Through the efforts of patriotic citizens the building was in 1932 removed from the old site and re-erected in a park in Eastover and is now Mint Museum of Art."
