Abstract:
Plate in the Center of the Square The Center of the City of Charlotte is where Tryon and Trade Streets cross--known as the Square--in early days the county courthouse stood there and this spot was known as courthouse square. The house was built of logs on a rough rock foundation. Upon the steps of this building Thomas Polk read the famous Declaration of Independence, May 20th, 1775. The Battle of Charlotte was fought there and since then has been hallowed by the memory of many distinguished men who have made speeches for May 20th celebrations and political rallies.
